These mares belong to the pinto stallion I posted the pic of yesterday. He was on his way back to them after visiting “the dark band” and “the pinto band.” Note that the pinto mare has blue eyes. Not unusual there, apparently, with several blue-eyed pintos in the other band we saw.

Hi TJ, when I was out in Costilla last year (at this time), my friend and I drove back through Carson Nat’l Forest to Window Rock. I thought to myself, what a FABULOUS area for wild horses. That luscious green strip of grass that borders the winding stream through the park. I then noticed a lot of fencing and assumed it was leased/owned by private parties, so no horses. I then read about an emergency BLM wild horse removal in the area and was saddened to see how thin and dehydrated those poor babies were. Presumably these were removed from the Eastern part of the park. We stopped in Dulce for gas and a map and drove through the Jicarilla rez and that was spectacular land! But I thought horses were being removed from that area? Hope I am mistaken.

The bay in the photo is named McKinley and she lives at Mustang Camp. The black is named Chuska and she lives in Tijeras. We did not get the pinto to gentle. http://www.MustangCamp.org
